How the Green Dot Go2Bank Reloadable Visa Debit Card Works
Just like many other prepaid debit cards, the standard Green Dot Prepaid Visa® Card (which is what this review will focus on) works like a bank debit card or ATM card. However, depending on what you load your Green Dot prepaid card to do, the working can vary a little. You can load the card to put money on other prepaid cards, debit cards or credit cards; and even to pay some specified bills.
Please Note! This page was originally published a few years ago and is no longer being updated in 2021. GreenDot is focusing on promoting their new and improved Go2Bank Cash Rebate Visa
Now, depending on the service that you will be using your prepaid card to access, there are a number of benefits you may receive as compared to using bank cards. For instance, you can use the Green Dot card to get some discounts on online shopping. In some cases, you may also be rewarded with points for using the card.
However, please note that the card has a pretty high monthly maintenance fee of $7.95 if you do not do a monthly direct deposit of at least $1,000 (which is a high amount as well compared to other prepaid Visa cards). Also, there is a $1.95 fee to purchase the card (activation fee) and a cash reload fee of $5.95, which is high as well in comparison to other similar prepaid card offers (bad features).
Benefits of using the Green Dot Go2Bank Reloadable Visa Card
- You can track spending on the go using the Green Dot mobile app.
- You can apply for this prepaid debit card whether you have a bank account or not and you will not be subject to a credit check before you are provided with the card.
- You will be able to fill other prepaid cards, debit cards or even credit cards easily with the Green Dot MoneyPak. On the same note, you can use the card to pay bills, withdraw cash from ATMs and even shop online.
- You will have no long usage commitments. This means you can choose whether to use it or not.
- You will not be subject to any penalty charges and overdraft fees.
- Finally, the card is reloadable meaning that you can top up the money on the card using direct deposit, MoneyPak or even bank money transfer services.

There are two ways to get a Green Dot reloadable Visa prepaid debit card. You can register online and setup your account or purchase a card at a retail location. Both options are simple. However, by registering online you can avoid the fee associated with purchasing a card in-store. You will be required to load the card before you can make purchases.
When registering, you may be required to submit some of your personal details including the provision of your social security number. After registration, you will be provided with a non-reloadable temporary prepaid card that you will use until you are provided with the reloadable prepaid card. It is important to note that the temporary card will not have access to some services like ATM usage, and it may be limited for use in the United States only.
As per the provision of Federal laws, Green Dot will have the responsibility of obtaining, verifying and recording relevant customer information that can be used to identify them (customers). Some of the basic information that Green Dot may require from you when registering for a Green Dot reloadable prepaid debit card include your name, date of birth, social security number and address.
The Green Dot prepaid card may be a good deal for you, but be sure to review our other prepaid card ratings which have less fees, such as the new no fee Chime Visa below, and different benefits. The monthly membership fees on Green Dot are high if you don’t have a direct deposit every month.
The bottom line is that it may or may not be the best reloadable card for you depending on how you use it. You should compare prepaid cards carefully to be sure you choose the prepaid card that’s most cost efficient for you.

Linda-
Good news- I was able to reach our contact at Green Dot and got the following advice regarding getting and unwanted card in the mail:
“About this offer. You received this offer because you’re a prior customer OR you opted in to receive marketing from one of our trusted third-party partners (they are saying that you opted in through a third party affiliated with Green Dot).
No one filled out an application on your behalf and no credit check was performed. This card is inactive (not active) and has no value and no account has been opened (in your name). If you don’t want this offer, simply destroy the physical card. To be removed from future mailings, visit GO2bank.com/opt-out or call (855) 449-0703.”
Hope this helps. 🙂

I ordered the Green Dot prepaid Visa from WalMart about 5 years ago and like it.
I use it to pay bills (like a bank account as I don’t have a checking account with any bank or credit union) and to buy merchandise off Amazon.
I still have not gotten my corona virus government check. 🙁
Would be nice to have my check direct deposited on my GreenDot Card.

Thanks for your expressing your concern Sandra. This sounds like a rip-off and so sorry your card balance is much lower than it should be, but hopefully there is a reasonable explanation.
Have you tried calling Green Dot customer service? Their phone number should be on the back on your card (the number is different depending on whether it’s a Visa or MasterCard).
Also, how long have you had the card? Pls advise.

Andrea-
Greetings and thx for sharing your negative experiences with GoBank.
Couple of quick questions- do you have the GoBank Visa or the new Go2Bank Visa?
If GoBank, you should be able to activate your Visa online here: GoBank.com/Activate
Have you tried that?
Or have you tried calling them?
If you have a GoBank debit MasterCard®, call (888) 288-1843.
If have a GoBank Visa® call (888) 280-8260.

Like Angela Russo, I have been getting text solicitations for an unsolicited GO2bank debit card. I do not have an account with them.
The last text I received from them was yesterday, March 11, 2021 stating they were printing my debit card that I never applied for.
I don’t have an account; and if someone else signed up under my name; it needs to be closed immediately!!
I don’t reply to scams.

Angela-
Greetings and thanks for sharing your rant about the unsolicited offer. I have researched this and think it might be a an unemployment insurance or benefits scam that has nothing to do with Go2Bank, but need to do some more research.
Pls keep us posted on how things develop and sorry for your problems. 🙁

I received an unsolicited GO2bank debit card in the mail. At first, I was confused thinking this was the card that one of my other debit cards was sending a replacement on, but it turns out this was something different.
At first I was considering using it and activated it, but then I thought I really don’t need it, so the only way to cancel this card was to call their customer contact# 855-459-1334, so I did.
But that same day I was receiving text messages about my balance being 0. So I called back again several days latter, as I was still getting text messages daily.
I spoke to someone and they essentially told me to ignore the text messages. I don’t know why I didn’t speak up at that point, but then after several weeks of irritating text messages, I tried to call back twice, waiting 38 minutes to 46 minutes, with the first call as I was talking to the rep.
I was hung up on. Then when I called back, after waiting 46 minutes, someone picked up and hung up, just like that.
At that point, I was really getting angry and decided not to call back. So right now, I called again and am waiting to speak to a rep again. I don’t know what to do about this. When I call, it says my card is locked and to try in 2 days.
I don’t know what’s going on, but I don’t like it. I finally spoke with a man (INOE) and I guess they are trying to figure out how to fix this. I have a case# 50091616 and he said it should be taken care of in a day or two. Somehow I don’t think this will happen.
