Overview

Average Monthly Fees and Costs:

Product Details:

  • Minimal fees. Using the card to make purchases is free; there are no monthly or inactivity fees; loading additional value on card is free and ATM withdrawals are $2.50 outside of MoneyPass network- free is you use MoneyPass ATMs.
  • Subaccounts. You can set up accounts for a teen’s allowance or safely send money to a friend or relative. Text alerts and emails can keep you up-to-date on card use (or alert you to unauthorized use) and balances on linked cards; you can even block ATM access. * Update: As of November 12, 2013, for security reasons, Bluebird changed a policy resulting in the reduction of the number of accountants from four cards to one card, as well as adding that your name must be on the account.
  • American Express branding. Pro: You have protection of something you bought with the card is stolen or damaged within 90 days of purchase. Con: American Express is not as widely accepted as some other cards.

Things We Like

Checking or debit account alternative rating: This card can replace a checking account for some people; its mobile check deposit app might make it desirable for customers whose banks or credit unions do not offer that service. As opposed to typical checking accounts, there is no risk of overdrawing or bouncing checks. Fees: no monthly maintenance fee (rare among prepaid debit cards).

Free ATM network? Yes, 22,000 MoneyPass locations. (Free ATM withdrawals with direct-deposit)

Things We Dislike

Although a very well respected brand, American Express is still not offered in as many places as Visa and MasterCard branded cards. ATM withdrawal fees $2.50 for out-of-network withdrawals plus whatever other surcharges or fees may apply with the outside network (though this type of fee is pretty standard in the prepaid card industry).

Wal-Mart’s partnership with American Express has produced a user-friendly card with thousands of locations – any Wal-Mart store — where you can easily add funds or withdraw cash. Wal-Mart’s partnership with American Express has produced a user-friendly card with thousands of locations – any Wal-Mart store — where you can easily add funds or withdraw cash. Fees are generally low,  though if you use ATMs much outside the MoneyPass network they could quickly add up. The big difference here is FDIC insurance. In addition to insuring funds up to $250,000, FDIC-insured status means that funds from government sources can be direct-deposited. For some users, this could potentially replace a checking account, and there is no risk of overdrawing or bouncing checks, you can check your balance from a smartphone, and you can set up sub-accounts to budget or distribute allowances.

Bluebird Card Rating- Bottom line:

Bluebird by American Express is a true checking or debit account alternative and can replace a checking account for some people; its mobile check deposit app might make it desirable for customers whose banks or credit unions do not offer that service. It’s also a good candidate for a teen allowance card.

  1. BenFebruary 26, 2014 at 10:10 pmThis card is accepted just like a normal American Express. This can cause more problems than some cards that are VISA or MasterCard based because AmEX is not accepted in a lot of locations that I have tried to use it. I tried to get cash back at Kroger and it didn’t allow it.
    • Hilary DoddridgeFebruary 26, 2014 at 10:12 pmThat is a very valid point and one that we hope people will consider when choosing a prepaid card, or card of any kind. Thanks again for the personal feedback. We really appreciate you taking the time to comment! Have a great dayReply
