Things We Like
If you are currently using payday loans and check-cashing services, the Ace card is a better value, and it comes with Visa protections plus money management tools to help you get a handle on spending.

Things We Dislike
There is a $1 card decline fee, and the insurance offered may give a false sense of security (when life insurance is needed, it is needed regardless of how the person dies). Other fees for using the phone or ATMs to make inquiries mean that this card is not a good choice for those who won’t be using a computer or smartphone to check balances.

Bottom Line
Ace Cash Express, which offers payday loans, title loans and other services for people who don’t use traditional banks, also offers Visa cards that can be used wherever Visa is welcome. Ace Cash Express, which offers payday loans, title loans and other services for people who don’t use traditional banks, also offers Visa cards that can be used wherever Visa is welcome. The prepaid cards have different fees, depending on the plan you choose. For the purposes of this review, we’re choosing the ACE Elite w/Direct Deposit Fee Advantage Plan (Monthly), which has a maintenance fee of $5 per month. (Other plans are month-to-month, which has the highest fees, and Fee Advantage without direct deposit.) As with other prepaid cards, the least-expensive way to get cash is to use the cash-back option with a PIN transaction.

Ace Elite Visa cards do not require a credit check, and approval is guaranteed. The cards are issued by MetaBank and are thus FDIC-insured. Government benefit payments and tax refunds may be loaded directly onto the cards. One card choice (Pink Elite) donates a percentage of earnings to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. ATM withdrawals are $2.50 each plus any fee charged by the ATM owner, but cash may be withdrawn without a service charge at Ace stores. Cards may also be reloaded at NetSpend locations, typically for a fee of $3.95. (It’s worth checking reload locations near you, though; prices vary.)
Bottom line:This card is easy to understand and without hidden fees. Some customers may eventually qualify for a $10 “cushion” or accidental death or dismemberment insurance. However, less-expensive options are available.

  • Setup fee: none listed
  • ATM transaction fee: $2.50
  • Monthly maintenance fee: $5(free with direct deposit of at least $500 per month)

Thanks Morgan for sharing you opinion on the ACE Cash Express Card.

Not sure what you mean by this. Are you talking about the small deposits (like a buck or two) that some companies require before the do a larger and/or monthly direct deposit? Please advise.

I got the ACE Cash Express card at their store by Kroger and would only rate it with 1 star. 🙁

I used it as an alternative prepaid debit card and would recommend Netspend over them.

They charged me a fee for a cash refill or 3 or 4 bucks plus a monthly usage fee. Just too many fees.

A female customer that is a friend of mine had the same problem with fees and dumped her card.

Now I’m using a low fee bank debit card and am happy.
